Attached clip shows how the sea ice can impact the animals that live in the Arctic. Polar bears are able to catch food when the ice is present, and tend to have a harder time finding food when the ice melts away. In this clip a group of Beluga whales were trapped by the ice, they could not go out further as they were tied to the open hole in the ice. They have to come up for air about every 20 minutes, and they also must move to keep the hole from freezing over. The whales had to endure the repeated attempts of polar bears hunting them – one whale was not so lucky. This clip can be used within a lesson to emphasize the impacts of sea ice.
