Plates Tectonics in Alaska: Wrangell-St. Elias PBS Video

Wrangell-St. Elias Mountain Building

This is a video about how the Yakutat Block, a fragment of continental crust, is being pushed by the pacific oceanic plate into the North American plate and causing the continued growth of the Wrangell-St. Elias mountain range, the largest coastal mountain range in the world! The video is only 2.5 minutes long and totally worth your time!

I would use this video to catch interest as well as an image like the one above to discuss plate tectonics in the context of mountains that the students are familiar with. I would tell them the geologic story of the Wrangell St.Elias Mountains. Possibly, I could have them choose a mountain range in Alaska and they could research and present to the class their findings on how and when it was formed…Mountains are one thing we have a whole class-worth of in AK!
