Rare-earth elements are currently supplied globally by China, however as China’s economy and domestic needs grow they are reducing the amount of rare-earth elements for export. This is causing global supply concerns as the industries that utilize large amounts of rare earth materials are growing as supply is shrinking. The Southeast Alaska prospect may hold the key to the US having its own supply of these important elements. Satellite, radar, cell phone and some renewable energy systems depend on these materials and without a steady supply of raw materials those industries cannot expand. Other issues could include examining the country of origin of the mining company and how that relates to the benefits to the country where the deposit is located.
