It isn’t hard to get excited about gold! Alaska’s “Gold Rush” greatly impacted our state and its economy. The production of gold diminished significantly after the rush, contributing a small percentage to our total economy. But the gold mining industry could be making a comeback. In 2012, Alaska miners recovered nearly one million ounces of gold, which hasn’t happened since the gold rush. Amazingly, that same yield occurred in two different years during the gold rush without the aid of modern technology! As a “hook” to catch my students’ interest and get them excited to learn about gold as a valuable mineral resource in our state, I would show the pictures from the website above that highlights some of the largest nuggets found in Alaska. We could perform some simple experiments on specific gravity (using other materials, but extrapolating our results to include gold).
