Alaska’s water quality can vary greatly even in areas close to each other. Knowing where your water comes from is important.
If you have a well, you may be tapping into an aquifer or groundwater, both sources are fed through the watershed it lies in. It is important to find out what else uses water in that watershed as many business, military, mining, and industrial uses can release pollutants into the water system.
The Cooperative Extension Service through UAF has published an informative brochure that explains what a watershed is, what pollutants may be present in our water supply, and what we can do to help keep our water clean. An excellent resource I will be using in my classroom.
