Placer Mining

One topic associated with minerals in Alaska is placer mining. Placer mining is when you are searching streams for mineral deposits, such as gold. It basically looks like golf panning to me. While gold is the most common mineral found there is also tungsten, copper, zinz, lead, and more! Seventy percent of the gold produced from Alaska has been a result of placer mining. This would go well with a field trip to a place where students could gold pan, or just with an Alaska history lesson. Here’s the link:
