The website sitnews.com, based out of Ketchikan, Alaska presents “stories in the news”. At the link https://www.sitnews.us/JuneAllen/AlaskaJade/100504_jade_mountain.html there is a 2004 article by June Allen about Alaska’s legendary Jade Mountain roughly 150 miles east of Kotzebue. The article discusses locations jade deposits in Alaska (our state mineral) and associated legends. The reading level seems appropriate to my 9th graders and includes maps of Alaska, as well as information relevant to this state and culture. Besides- a whole mountain of Jade sounds really cool!
